Kidney stone formation takes place when different substances in urine such as calcium, oxalate, and phosphorus become highly concentrated and potent. The body utilizes the food for energy and after absorbing energy from the food the waste products of the body are carried to the kidney and are excreted from the body.
Kidney stone formation is caused by harmful food, and due to genes, environment and body weight etc.
Types of kidney stones:
There are different kinds of kidney stones given below:
These are further divided into two major forms which are calcium oxalate stones and calcium phosphate stones.
These stones result from kidney infections. Staying infection free can prevent more struvite stones.
Uric Acid Stones
: When urine is persistently acidic, these type of stones are formed. Meat, fish and shellfish increase the amount of uric acid in the urine.
These stones are caused due to a genetic abnormality. In this disorder cystine leaks through the kidney and into the urine, forming crystals that tend to accumulate into stones.
How to prevent kidney stones:
Drink plenty of water:
The most important thing you can do to prevent a kidney stone is drinking lots of fluids, especially water. This is of utmost vitality in decreasing the risk of kidney stone. If you cannot start drinking that much water at once, do it gradually. Increase one glass of fluid daily. Aim for at least 2.5-3 liter water a day. Avoid sugary drink. They may increase the risk of kidney inflammation.
Minimize utilization of Animal Proteins/take plant proteins:
Reducing animal proteins for your diet may also prove helpful in minimizing the risk of kidney stone. Use less quantity of fish, seafood, poultry, meat and eggs. Plant-based protein sources are healthful. Add these sources in your food such as lentils, peas, beans, seeds or nuts.
Reduce amount of sodium:
Avoid using packaged food, fast food and ready to eat food. They often carry a large amount of sodium. Choose fresh vegetable and fruits. Use whole grains, milk and yogurt, small portions of unseasoned meat, unsalted nuts and seeds and fish and poultry. Replace salt with ginger, pepper, herbs, spices, seasoning, lemon or lemon zest.
If you don’t want to fall prey of kidney stone then you must avoid alcohol. You can take 2 drinks a day of you are a woman and a man can intake 3 drinks a day.
Carefully use Vitamin C supplement:
High amount of vitamin C increases the risk of kidney stone. If you are suffering from Vitamin C deficiency and want to take supplements to overcome the deficiency, take less than 100mg per day.
Limit high oxalate food:
If you have calcium oxalate stone, reduce the usage of high-oxalate foods. Food which are high oxalate include dark chocolate, buck wheat, wheat bran, black tea, soy beans, peanuts, start fruit, rhubarb, dried fig, spinach, okra, beets etc.
Eat Calcium-packed foods:
Try to eat calcium rich foods rather than taking supplements. Calcium-rich foods include milk, milk products, calcium fortified foods and beverages, soy, rice drink and orange juice, canned fish with bones etc. If you need to take supplements, take lower quantity and take it with meals.
