Side Effects of Oversleeping

Getting enough sleep is quite important for your health. An average sleep session should be from 6 to 8 hours. Oversleep can also affect your health negatively which is associate with some severe health issues. Oversleeping is directly associated with depression which is the reason for many other health problems such as heart diseases.

What are the side effects of oversleeping?

Have a look on how the oversleep can affect your health:

Obesity

Sleeping too little or too much both are not good for your health; they both can increase your weight. The link between sleep and overweight remains same even the attention is paid on food intake and physical activity.

There has been performed a research according to which people who slept for 9-10 hours for 6 years gained more weight as compared to this who used to sleep for 7-8 hours a day. Those with moderate sleeping hours, got no excessive weight and avoided obesity. . People who slept nine to 10 hours each night were 25 percent more likely to have gained 5 kilograms over the study period, even after controlling for food intake and physical activity. This result shows that sleeping hours are closely related to weight gain or loss.

Headaches

Oversleeping also causes headaches because oversleep has effects on certain neurotransmitters in the brain such as serotonin. Sleeping for longer hours on off days such as weekends and other vacations can cause pain in head. Sleeping too much during the day times cause a disruption in their nighttime sleep and sur to this they may suffer from headaches in the morning and may be the whole day.

Poor Socioeconomic conditions

People who sleep much have low socioeconomic status and so they have less access to health care. Such people are rarely diagnosed if they are suffering from some illness. Such as if a person has heart disease but low socioeconomic status, his illness shall not be diagnosed.

Back pain

Long sleeping hours may also lead you to back pain. There was a time when doctors used to tell the people suffering from the back pain to head straight to bed and take rest. You may not even need to curtail your regular exercise program when you are experiencing back pain.

Depression

Regular sleep is important for a healthy mind. Long sleeping hours may increase the risk of depression in a person. Although insomnia is more commonly linked to depression than oversleeping is, roughly 15% of people with depression sleep too much. This may in turn make their depression worse.

Diabetes

Risk of diabetes is increased with the increase in sleeping hours. According to a research people who slept for more than 8 hours a night were twice as likely to get caught by type 2 diabetes and impaired glucose tolerance.

Cardiovascular diseases

According to a study, people who sleep 9-11 hours are 40% more likely to have cardiovascular diseases than the people who sleep for 7-8 hours. Therefore sleeping more than 8 hours can lead you to increased risk of heart diseases.

It might make it harder to get pregnant

There has been performed a research in Korea , in 2013 where the sleep habits of 650 women were analyzed and it was concluded that women who sleep for 9-11 hours or more are less likely to conceive early and those who sleep for 7-8 hours get pregnant in early months of intercourse.
