How to overcome the Difficulties Caused by Folic Acid Deficiency


Folic acid which is also known as Folate is a type of vitamin B that helps our body staying healthy in more than one way, it helps in:

  • repairing DNA
  • Making DNA
  • Produce red blood cells

If a person doesn’t take enough folic acid in daily diet he may end up with the DEFICIENCY of folic acid. There are so many foods that are so rich in Folate that you don’t have to take supplements if you eat those foods regularly, citrus juices, dark green veggies are the main source of folic acid.

It doesn’t take long for your body to become deficient of Folic acid if you don’t eat enough folic acid. The deficiency may also be because of an ailment or genetic mutation that prevents your body from changing Folate in to usable form.

  • There are certain medications that are used for rheumatoid arthritis, Cancer and seizures, can be a reason of deficiency.

For the diagnoses the physician will examine you and will take the blood test to check the number of red blood platelets to know if your body have enough folic acid or not. The level of Vitamin B12 will also be checked, few people individuals whose Folate acid levels are low also have low level of Vitamin B12.

Prevention from deficiency and problems caused by it:

The main measure one can take to prevent the deficiency of folic acid is taking Folic acid supplements. Folate is usually prescribed in combination with Vitamin B supplements that are also called vitamin B complexes.

If you are diagnosed folic acid deficiency you should quit drinking alcohol and if you are pregnant then there shouldn’t be any carelessness like liquor consumption.

To overcome the deficiency of Folate one must eat a balance nutritious diet. The following are the foods that carry high amount of folic acid.

  • Broccoli and spinach
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Peas
  • bananas and melons
  • tomato
  • eggs
  • beans
  • mushrooms
  • asparagus
  • kidney and liver meat
  • poultry
  • pork
  • shellfish
  • wheat
  • fortified cereals

The recommended Folate dose is 400 mg per day. Women who may become pregnant should take a Folate supplement. Folate is critical for normal growth.
