Alcohol is an intoxicating drug which contains Ethanol and is produced by the fermentation of sugar, yeast and starches. It is absorbed by the stomach quickly and goes into the blood stream through small intestine. It slows down many body functions such as it results in disturbed perception, unsteady movement, inability to react properly and quickly, slurred speech, blurred vision etc.

It is a depressant which makes a person unable to think rationally and make any judgment. Using alcohol, in a long run can take you to serious health consequences.

What are the side effects of Alcohol?

Everyone knows that alcohol consumption is hazardous to health and can cause major medical problems in the body. It has been revealed by the researchers that consuming alcohol in linked with more than 60 diseases. It does numerous kinds of things in your body. You are never aware of all of its effects on your health. Here are a few health conditions associated with the heavy consumption of alcohol:

Depression

Heavy usage of alcohol can cause depression and if it is used for long-term then it goes hand in hand with depression. Some are of the view that alcohol is used to reduce the depression so there are debates about which one comes first-the drinking or the depression. Some studies show that alcohol is used for releasing depression while others go totally contrary.

Dementia

This is a fact that brain goes on shrinking as a person grows at a rate of about 2.1% per decade, but use of alcohol speeds up the process and takes the certain key areas of brain to shrinkage which results in dementia which is related to memory loss and other mental disorders. It takes to many mental disabilities such as thinking rationally, making plans, making judgments and others. Drinking alcohol may also affect the amount of vital nutrients in the body which triggers the dementia.

Gout

Gout is a condition which takes place when the uric acid crystals are formed in the joints. It is a painful condition.

Seizures

Heavy consumption of alcohol causes epilepsy. It can also trigger seizures in those who don’t have epilepsy. It does not only affect the person with the disease but also interferes with the medicines which are being used for treatment.

Heart Diseases

Heavy alcohol drinking also causes formation of clots in the blood which leads to heart attack or heart failure. Drinking alcohol can make the risk of death double among those who already have had a heart attack. Another diseases in which the heart muscles become weaker and ultimately fail is also caused by alcohol usage. The disease is known as cardiomyopathy. Other than these, there are many other heart condition which are caused by alcohol such as abnormal circadian rhythm, arterial and ventricular fibrillation, twitching in heart’s pumping chamber and in some cases death.

High blood pressure

Alcohol destroys the blood circulation system in human body which results into high blood pressure, medically known as hypertension. It also disrupts the nervous system.

High blood pressure can become chronic with the passage of time and can lead to many other medical conditions such as heart diseases, stroke, kidney diseases and others.

Cancer

Drinking on regular basis make you habitual of it due to which the risk of cancer increases. It is believed that the increased risk comes when the body converts alcohol into acetaldehyde, a potent carcinogen. Areas which may be affected by cancer due to alcohol consumption include mouth, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, breast, liver etc. the effects of alcohol become severer in those who use tobacco.

There are so many other chronic diseases which rise due to drinking the alcohol which include:

  • Anemia
  • Everlasting fatigue
  • Cirrhosis
  • Pancreatitis
  • Nerve damage
  • Infectious diseases (such as TB, pneumonia, HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases etc)
